CP Rail to conduct cold weather biodiesel testing

Canadian Pacific has partnered with Natural Resources Canada on a biodiesel fuel pilot project that will see CP operate four GE AC4400 diesel locomotives in captive service between Calgary and Edmonton as part of a five-month test cycle.

Tidal Power Demonstration

The Fundy tidal power demonstration project in Nova Scotia was given the green light by Nova Scotia’s Environment Minister. The marine demonstration site will consist of three underwater berths for turbines located in the Minas Passage, near Parrsboro, home of the highest tides in the world. The project will set up $10-million research facility to test underwater turbines to convert tidal energy into electricity. The project has passed environmental assessment and will be subject to strict conditions to protect the environment.

I think tidal power is a vastly untapped source of renewable energy that holds potential for countries with ocean shore geographies. We’ll be watching projects like this closely.

Canada And U.S. Work Together To Cut Air Pollution From Shipping

The proposed Canada-US Emission Control Area (ECA) will subject large ships operating in the designated areas to stringent standards. Specifically, the measures will reduce their nitrogen oxides emissions by 80 per cent and sulphur oxides by 96 per cent. Emissions of fine particles will also be reduced.

Retire Your Ride

Retire Your Ride is an initiative of The Government of Canada, Clean Air Foundation and its partners, designed to enable people to get their high-polluting cars off the road and reward them for doing so. The program is committed to improving air quality by responsibly recycling vehicles and aims to retire at least 50,000 vehicles per year until March 31, 2011.
